Cash Music

New Website

In addition to writing poems, I've been looking for a way to make money online with my poetry. This blog was one of those attempts. Up until a couple of days ago, I hadn't made a penny online. Taking a hint from Firefox I signed on with website whose name doesn't sound particularly poet-friendly, CashMusic. Although the CashMusic format was a bit confusing, I was able to upload PDFs, videos and photos and created a website connected to a money processor. Please, visit my website and look around. If you like what you see, tell a friend. If there's anything you don't like, please tell me. Here's the link:

Estuary Sanctuary

My muse has me channeling the blues.

Estuary Sanctuary

Let me tell you what happened,
Share my story, if you're willing.
While over visiting a friend
We were laid back, just chilling
When suddenly the cops busted in.
Somebody must have ratted on us.
A slimy traitor we trusted in
Turned all snitch and dishones'.
To me it was just a little toke,
Just a wee puff of weed.
To the cop it was no joke
Tho justice was miscarried.
I'm running from the law
In the state of Arkansas.

While visiting shirttail relations,
We started playing stud poker.
I thought I knew the regulations
Even tho my cousin's a known joker.
You know how the talk goes around
Dissing each other while gaming,
Trying to outdo each other's putdown.
A misunderstanding led to my framing.
Now I'm on the lam
In the land of Alabam.

In the region of rice and beans
I found refuge in New Orleans.
In that jazzy city
Finally somebody had pity.
There among the Cajun queens
Using cagy ways and means,
My hard efforts do the trick
To make a living by sucking dick.

Not Tasking, Basking

Not Tasking, Basking
9 July 2014

Among the abandoned mines,
We look at the summer sky.
Relaxing in the pines,
We watch three hawks circle by.
Sitting on the porch swing
Listening to the birds sing,
Swatting occasional flies,
Not doing a darn thing,
Just swapping true lies.
Together, my friend and I
Watch the evening sunset.
As the time goes by,
Life is good, you bet.

When I Heard at the Coming of Twilight

When I first read this poem, it impacted me. On reflection, I wondered if it could be improved by rhyming.

When I Heard at the Coming of Twilight
14 January 2013
Original by Walt Whitman

When I heard with the coming of twilight
How my name had been received as luminary
In the capitol, still it was not a happy night
For me that followed; and else, when I made merry
Or when my plans were fully completed
Still I was not entirely glad.
But the day when I rose at dawn from the bed
Of perfect health, refreshed, singing,
Drinking in all that was to be had
Of the ripe breath of autumn's bringing,
When I saw the full moon above the land
Grow pale and disappear in the morning light,
When I wandered alone over the seastrand
And undressing, bathed, laughing with delight
In the cool waters, and saw the sun rise,
And when I thought of how my dear friend,
My lover, was on his way, a prize,
Oh, then I was happy to no end.
Then each breath tasted much sweeter—
And all that day my food nourished
Me more—and the beautiful day passed fleeter,
And the next came equally flourished—
And with the next, at evening, ecstasy,
My friend came. Later as an underscore,
While all was still, I heard the sea
Roll slowly, continually up the shore.
I heard the hissing, rustling liquidly
Upon the sands, as directed to me, murmuring
To congratulate me, for the one I love avidly
Lay sleeping by me under the same covering.
In the cool of the night, without sound,
In the autumn moonbeams, his face was inclined
Towards me, and his arm lay lightly around
My breast—and that night was happiness enshrined.

When I heard at the Close of the Day
(No. 11, from ‘Calamus’ written circa 1859)
by Walt Whitman (1819-1892)

WHEN I heard at the close of the day how my name had been receiv'd
with plaudits in the capitol, still it was not a happy night
        for me that follow'd;
And else, when I carous'd, or when my plans were accomplish'd, still
        I was not happy;
But the day when I rose at dawn from the bed of perfect health,
refresh'd, singing, inhaling the ripe breath of autumn,
When I saw the full moon in the west grow pale and disappear in the
        morning light,
When I wander'd alone over the beach, and undressing, bathed,
laughing with the cool waters, and saw the sun rise,
And when I thought how my dear friend, my lover, was on his way
        coming, O then I was happy;
O then each breath tasted sweeter—and all that day my food nourish'd
me more—and the beautiful day pass'd well,
And the next came with equal joy—and with the next, at evening, came
        my friend;
And that night, while all was still, I heard the waters roll slowly
        continually up the shores,
I heard the hissing rustle of the liquid and sands, as directed to
        me, whispering, to congratulate me,

For the one I love most lay sleeping by me under the same cover in
        the cool night,
In the stillness, in the autumn moonbeams, his face was inclined
        toward me,
And his arm lay lightly around my breast—and that night I was happy.

Guider and Cider

On Monday I had coffee with a Facebook friend who is a life coach.

Guider and Cider
11 December 2012

I enjoyed chatting over coffee,
Although we had chocolate and cider.
Thanks for the time and talking to me
Like a confidential insider.
The conversational incentive
Covering of topics was satisfactory.
Thanks for being attentive
While I bragged about my poetry.
I felt uplifted and challenged,
While discussing your approach
And my internal peace was impinged,
By your thoughts on being a life coach.
Since kinesthetic learning is my style,
I didn't feel the full consequences
Until I started moving around after a while.
As I understand the sequences
A good life coach influences
Finding your passion and voice.
I think I'm already there.
My passion is poetry and my choice
Is to make it a business affair.
At this point I need help with advertising.
Can you help me with that or refer me
To someone who's good at publicizing,
Whose personality would prefer me?

Valentine’s Day 2012

Valentine’s Day 2012
14 February 2012
On this special occasion
I just wanted to say,
With the voice of persuasion,
“Happy Valentine’s Day!”
I hope it’s a lovely delight
And filled with friendly cheer;
Then at the end of the night
You get naked with someone dear.

Latecomer Summer

Latecomer Summer
2 November 2011
The weather was just too nice
To write poetry and stay indoors
So I thought about it twice
And played hookey by going outdoors.
I called my friend, Billy Bob
To see if he wanted to go to the park.
It was his day off from his job.
We went to the local landmark
And saw koi fish in the reflecting pool,
Grounds with flowers ad nauseam,
Avoided a student class from school
And took in the Timkin art museum.
While crossing back over the bridge
I spied an artist with his tripod
Painting, standing out on a ridge,
So I trotted over to his sod.
It was truly an afternoon
Filled with beauty and art.
It seemed to end too soon
When it was time to depart.
